I have to tell you that my yard is so brown right now and I can’t take it one more moment.
I an itchin’ for green green, full trees, flowers in the ground, dinner on the patio and kids running until dark.
I was going through my photos the other day and came across these photos from last summer.
I love to create little garden spaces all over my yard and we finally decided to start gardening using the terracing on the side of the home.
The terracing gave us instant garden beds and they are the perfect size to reach everything and walk through them.
Last summer we only started with the first terrace as we had to pull out all of the re-existing plants and modify the soil.
This summer we will also add the next level to our little garden.
Last summer we started with pumpkins, lemon cucumbers, kale, radishes, green beans, spinach and zucchini.
We also added some raspberry bushes around the patio.
The pumpkins never made it but we were prepared for that.
Colorado soil is harsh and it takes many years to properly amend your soil.
The lemon cucumbers, kale, green beans and zucchini really thrived and we loved having so much throughout the summer and early fall.
The radishes and spinach didn’t do great either but we will give them another shot this coming summer.
As we are planning out our garden for this summer we are wanting to keep in mind companion planting.
This is a great resource that I found on Burpee Home Gardens.
This summer I would like to add a larger herb garden in this section of the yard, carrots, onions, tomatoes, beets and cauliflower.
I will let you know how it goes and what plants work in our crazy soil.
What are you excited to plant this year?
If you live in Colorado please share what veggies work really well for you (share your gardening tips too).
Come back on Friday for the winner of the Danielle Donaldson original painting and her favorite art supplies!
Jeanne,
I’m jealous of your “brown” ground! 🙂 In northern MN we still have a ton of the white stuff covering the ground with more expected in a few days. I don’t even want to say the “s” word 🙂 I’m looking forward to summer too! I can’t wait to see your progress in the garden this year, our soil is tough too and we have such a short growing season.
I’m calling this place “brown town”. I can’t wait for GREEN!!!!! I am most looking forward to my lilacs blooming!!! I also want to build a garden and plant raspberries!! My daughter’s mother-in-law grows them and grapes….and tons of vegetables!!!!!! She lives in Greenwood Village……I know her secret is she waters a lot!!!!!!! Post all your pickins when there ripe!!!!
Hi Jeanne as you were talking about gardening I was wondering. Do you live on acreage?
We only live on 1/3 of an acre. We just try to make the most of our space:-)
Have you tried elevated beds? They are nice and you can sit on the edge of the wood to garden. I had one at my last house and I loved it! I want to put one or some here at this house. Also, Williams Sonoma has great tall wood boxes so you don’t have to bend over to garden you can stand. Which I love and I call it a salad garden!
