Welcome to the Icons + Legends series. Each month I will highlight a different artist and share what I find fascinating about their work and life. This month in the spotlight is beloved Finnish painter, Helen Schjerfbeck.
Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946) was a Finnish modernist painter, celebrated as one of the most original voices in Nordic art history. She is a treasured icon in Finland and only recently has she begun to get recognition worldwide. Schjerfbeck’s career spanned over 60 years, with her painting style ranging from traditional realism to minimalist modernism.
When I look at the progression of Helene’s art I see the editing out of everything that is not needed to showcase only what must remain.

Her portraits demand deep reflection. Thank you so much for the introduction.
Exquisite and deeply moving creations by Helene Schjerfbeck. Before now this artist was completely unknown to me despite courses in Art History while in college and significant independent study over many years. The transformation of her skill and interpretive vision over time attests to her exceptional originality and technical expertise. Delighted to have been introduced to this woman’s life and work.
