On my most recent trip in Italy I made a practice of capturing the landscapes and really looking at the lines and shapes with fresh eyes. Whether I was carrying a pencil and a small notebook or I was back in my makeshift studio with watercolors and gouache, I was practicing documenting my views in new ways.

For a month I collected lines and shapes, created a vocabulary of mark making, played for the pure joy of getting in the studio, narrowed down supplies even more, worked on paper, vellum and raw canvas and pushed myself to see how few lines and shapes could I create and still capture what I was seeing. This time was one of the best gifts I have given myself in a long time. It was just for me (or so I thought).

As I was packing up the studio space, taking art off the wall that had been attached with artist tape, noticing notebooks with graphite sketches, washing paint brushes and closing the lids on my watercolors I knew I wanted to share the peace, joy and excitement of working in this new way outside of my normal creative process.

If you have been wanting to create loose landscape studies and abstract landscapes I know these techniques will bring play and practice into your creative time.

I would love to have you join me for a TWO PART live Zoom workshop. I will share the supplies I brought, how I set up my makeshift studio, how I “broke the ice” in this new creative space while traveling, We will create a mini sketchbook together, create a vocabulary of mark making so you won’t get stuck, work on paper/vellum/raw canvas, work in watercolor/ gouache/graphite/ink/charcoal/color pencil/china marker, learn how to break down a large landscape, create abstract studies and landscapes using the Lake Como, Italy photos I will provide, explore the beauty and freedom of being inspired by the same lines and shapes again and again. Be at home with your marks and ideas.
