Have you ever looked at a painting of the sea and the movement within the work was so expressive that you could taste the saltwater on your face, feel the breeze whipping through your hair and smell the ocean air? That is the impact I feel when looking at graphite sketches, pastel works and oil paintings by Joan Eardley. Just as Joan often painted right at the shore and sometimes in the water (see the photo included), I believe that is why her work is so powerful and transfers so much emotion. We get to be a part of that moment too.

Join me for a two part live Zoom art workshop where we will study the work of Joan Eardley. We will focus on her landscapes of the fishing villages of Catterline and the North-East coast of Scotland.

We will begin with a brief history of Joan and her work and then study her marks. We will do multiple studies in graphite and charcoal followed by works in pastel. Part two of the workshop will focus on creating expressive paintings of the sea based upon our previous work. We will be guided the whole time by the work of Joan.

Joan created with oil paints, pastels, charcoals, watercolors, chalks, ink and even ballpoint pens. She also often included found objects (especially along the shore) into her work. I hope this gives you the freedom to use the supplies you have and to experiment with them throughout the workshop.
