Let me tell you…this project was a doozy.
Everyone shares girl room makeovers but no one is spreading the love on teen boy rooms.
Let me backtrack a bit.
Our Jack is 13 and has had the same paint on the walls for the past 10 years.
10 years.
When his friends would tell him how cool the clouds were on his ceiling he looked at them like they were dorks!
He hadn’t even asked for a whole room makeover…he had just begged us to paint over the dang clouds.
We knew it was time to just start completely over and bless him with a room that would take him to college.
Sniffle, sniffle, sniffle.
Redoing a room of a teenager takes a BIT more time than planning a room out when they were four.
They have opinions and you kind of have to respect that:-)
That whole sentence above gets in the way of decorating progress.
We have been picking furniture pieces, paint colors etc. for 6 months.
6 months.
I don’t think there is anything in Jack’s room that he didn’t OK, pick or have the last word on.
It has been my love language to him.
I wanted him to love it, to know it was his space and that I really heard him (even when I wanted to cry, scream or both).
{The boys working on getting the trim work up}
We still have little things to add but rooms take time and we are willing to wait for the perfect accessories.
Here is the first teen boy’s room I have ever put together.
{Benjamin, I will be ready for you when the time comes and I promise to listen to you too:-)}
Come back on Thursday for all the details about paint colors etc.
Thank you for looking and Jack is so ready to pile his stuff all over the place:-)
Oh my gosh, they groe so quickly, don’t they?? 🙁
I love the way you mixed elegant colors and vintage furniture (I love the bed!!!) with teenager-style elements! Great!
It looks fabulous! I love it all.
Wow!! You did awesome!! I love it all!! I really love the bed to!!!
Jeanne, you guys did a great job with this! The best part is the relationship building you did with your son in the process. It’s not easy collaborating. I remember taking a client and her 12 year old daughter shopping and thinking it would be fun. Talk about wondering what on earth you were thinking about 5 minutes into it. ;-( Nice work on blending it into the rest of your house decor, too.
looks terrific jeanne! xo
I know this post is a little older but I’m hoping you could tell me where you got the pillows on your son’s bed? They are amazing!
These were from Restoration Hardware a long time ago:-)
Holy cow- that is fabulous Jeanne! I can’t believe how different it looks, and I’m sure he loves having a space that feels so “grown up”. Great job Olivers!
I LOVE Jack’s room! And trust me don’t I know it when it comes to decorating a teen boy’s room… we are working on bedroom number 3 (yes THREE!! how did that happen?) Our youngest, at 14, is now a freshman in high school. His room has been occupied by other his eldest brother, shared with his older brother, and now is his room solely. So it is time… this summer we were doing to make it over but it did not happen! My gift to him is to have it completely done before Christmas…. (especially since we might be moving next summer.) I will definitely have him take a look at Jack’s room…. see if maybe we can take away a few somethings he might enjoy. Once again thank you for sharing!!
They do grow up quickly. I love the room makeover.
Really cool room! As a mom of four boys, I really appreciate this post. Would you mind sharing where the bed frame is from? We are also a military family so I am always on the lookout for stylish pieces that are trim so they can fit in any house! Thank you!
I am so happy for jack. it looks wonderful, Jeanne! love that quote on the book shelves. so, so cute that old shot of jack in his bed!!!
I am so happy you shared this bedroom maker over. I know doing over a teens room is more difficult then when they were little. I totally see your style in there…. it looks great!!! I’m sure he loves it.
I really like the art work above the bed.
What, no more Star Wars? No more bunk beds??!! :))
This room is simply amazing!!! What a cool makeover…very Restoration Hardware! I really LOVE it! Braden has so much c**p, I mean legos all over his room, it doesn’t really matter what decorating I do, because you can never see anything but a sea of legos…drives me crazy!! 🙂
Great job guys, so happy for Jack!

Where can I get this headboard, please?
It was from Restoration Hardware. Thanks!
Outstandingly good taste!! I’d like to know how you/he got those bedside-books to levitate?
Gorgeous Jeanne!! I love what you guys did and that you did it together. I can’t wait to get moved and settled so that I can start on my first teen boy’s room too:)
A SERIOUSLY COOL ROOM!
Can’t wait to hear all the juicy details! I have to teen rooms to get done, desperately needed the inspiration! 🙂
What a fabulous job you did on this room! I love the wall color, the bed, and the bookshelves & pegs. Thanks for your lovely blog.
This is wonderful! I love the bed and all the little details!! You guys should all be really proud! Getting ready to re-do my tweens room too since we added a dormer, hope I can get the same ‘feel’ like in his space! Love it!
“Let’s Here It For The Boy” room. I adore this.
It looks great! Love the color, and the bed is awesome! I recently did my 13 year old son, Jack’s room, too 🙂 It was one of my favorite spaces to work on.
This is great! I’ve been looking all over for inspiration for my older teen boy’s room. I will be pinning this for sure! 🙂
This is amazing. My 11-year-old is beginning to express an interest in giving his room a make over. (He’s in his older brother’s room that was decorated when the older brother was six. His older brother turned 22 yesterday…) I’ve been searching for roll up maps at a reasonable price for ages. I’m resorting to framing old National Geographic maps from my daddy’s collection of 1968-69 magazines. I love them, but I’m still looking for the roll up type.
LOVE it! We have a pre-teen girl and boy who will get room makeovers real soon. Thanks for the inspiration! I hopped over from Edie’s blog. I <3 your space. 🙂
This is amazing! I am in the middle of doing my 11-year-old son’s bedroom — and you are right…it is a LOOONG process! I think we’ll be done next year. 🙂 I love this for inspiration!
Found you at Laura’s blog (Finding Home) for the fall tour and just kept browsing. Love your blog! 🙂
Where did you get his bed from?
