Making Art Sing: Supply List - Jeanne Oliver

Derwent Inktense Water-soluble Pencils

Derwent Inktense Pencils are the best water-soluble pencil.  You can use them dry but add water and the color turns into vibrant ink.  Once it is dry the color is fixed because it’s permanent.     You can also use blocks of the colors.   I have the 72-color watercolor pencil tin.  But here are the colors that I use the most.  *If I only had these 2 I would happy.

From the Tin of 12– 0200 sun yellow (only for the ballerina dress)

*1800 Baked Earth MY FAV!

2000 Bark (I think I used it?)

2200 Ink Black

From the Tin of 24- 0600 Shiraz (only for the ballerina)

1900 Willow

2100 Charcoal Grey

From the Tin of 36– 1740 Saddle Brown

*2020 Indian ink

From the Tin of 72- 0220 Sicilian Yellow

1730 Oak

The inktense watercolor pencils are very intense.  I tend to use the warm with the cool.   Like painting the shadow may either warm or cool.   I do like some of the blue tones.     I have many I have never used.  I purchased the 72.  I would recommend getting the watercolor pencils individually.

Charcoal

General charcoal pencils make sure you get the soft lead.  2B, 4B, 6B. Willow Charcoal in thin and thick sizes.  Stabilo: pencils in black and blue and brown and white.   They have a waxy texture and are water based.  (Dick Blick under Stabilo).

INK

I will be using Liquid Sumi ink by Yasutomo.

This is permanent black ink made from quality vegetable oil soot.  Formulated especially for Sumi painting and calligraphy.   (Yah, I got that all from the web site!)

It waters down really well and I love the grey tones I get from it.  There are many types of ink out there.  So use what you have.

Bristol Paper pads 300 series, 100lb. 20 sheets by Strathmore 9×12 and 11×14

The names Mylar, vellum acetate will be interchanged.  I was looking for a substrate that I could draw, paint, ink on.  And upon looking at on old drawing I did in art school I wanted to try it again.  I have decided to work on Dura-Lar by Grafix.  Grafixarts.com

So that’s why I chose the Dura-Lar.  But know you have options.

You may find a film at a drafting company or architecture firm.  They use it all the time.  I have purchased Mylar at my local art supply store (not Michaels).  It comes in many different film widths and sizes and rolls.
